6.2 Conditional Statements and Hypotheticals

The Basic Conditional and Conditional Tense in Dutch

The conditional tense is used to talk about hypothetical situations, possibilities, or polite requests. It corresponds to English sentences with "would", and Dutch also uses "if" (als) statements to express conditions.

1. Basic "If" Statements

Conditional sentences in Dutch often use the word als (if). The structure can be similar to English:

Structure of Simple "If" Clauses

  • Als + present tense, main clause (present or future tense)

  • The verb in the main clause typically stays in the present or uses a future marker (e.g., zullen).

Examples:
1. Als het regent, blijf ik thuis.= "If it rains, I stay home."
2. Als je hard werkt, zal je slagen.= "If you work hard, you will succeed."

2. The Conditional Tense ("Would")

Structure of the Conditional Tense

The conditional tense in Dutch is formed with the auxiliary verb zouden (the conditional form of zullen) followed by the infinitive of the main verb.

Examples of Zouden
1. Ik zou naar het strand gaan, als ik tijd had.= "I would go to the beach if I had time."
2. Zij zouden graag een nieuwe auto kopen.= "They would like to buy a new car."
3. Zou jij me helpen met mijn huiswerk?= "Would you help me with my homework?"

3. Combining "If" Statements with the Conditional

To talk about hypothetical or unreal situations, combine als (if) with the past tense or past perfect, and use zouden in the main clause.

Examples:
1. Als ik rijk was, zou ik een groot huis kopen.= "If I were rich, I would buy a big house."
2. Als hij meer oefende, zou hij beter zijn.= "If he practiced more, he would be better."
3. Als we meer tijd hadden, zouden we langer blijven.= "If we had more time, we would stay longer."

4. Polite Requests with Zouden

The conditional tense can also be used to make polite requests, just like "would" in English.

Examples:
1. Zou u me kunnen helpen?= "Could you help me?"
2. Zou je iets willen drinken?= "Would you like something to drink?"
3. Zou ik een vraag mogen stellen?= "May I ask a question?"

5. Word Order in Conditional Sentences

When the sentence begins with als, the subject and verb in the main clause are inverted (verb comes before the subject).

Examples:
1. Als ik tijd had, zou ik komen.= "If I had time, I would come."
2. Ik zou komen, als ik tijd had.= "I would come, if I had time."
